Cleaning up Lightroom in Windows

If you find Lightroom is getting sluggish it may be the result of a corrupted preference file - an issue that has plagued lightroom since day one. Here is how to solve this issue:

  1. Close all programs, especially Lightroom.
  2. Click on Start and type %appdata% in the search box.  Open the "Adobe" folder and rename the "Lightroom" folder to "Lightroom_old".
  3. Click on Start and type %temp% and delete all the files and folders in the "Temp" folder.
  4. Launch Lightroom and let it create a new catalog.  Close Lightroom.
  5. Click on Start and type %appdata% in the search box.  Open the "Adobe" folder and rename the "Lightroom" folder to "Lightroom_old2".
  6. Rename "Lightroom_old" back to "Lightroom".

This should clean out any old preferences that were corrupted and hopefully improve performance.  For other tips on optimizing Lightroom performance go to http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html.
